The early 20th-century poet Rainer Maria Rilke famously said: ‘If my demons leave me, I am afraid my angels may take flight as well.’ When the artist Edvard Munch (painter of The Scream) was told that psychiatric treatment could rid him of many of his troubles, he responded: ‘They are part of me and my art. They are indistinguishable from me, and it would destroy my art. I want to keep those sufferings.’ The Nobel prize-winning mathematician and economist John Nash, whose paranoid schizophrenia became the subject of the book and movie A Beautiful Mind, when asked by an incredulous fellow mathematician ‘How could you believe you are being recruited by aliens from outer space to save the world?’, replied: ‘Because the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the same way that my mathematical ideas did. So I took them seriously.’ Even Einstein recognized the necessity of accepting psychological lows as well as highs in his search for a theory of general relativity, which made him gravely ill.
